The Cooldown

James Titchener / @mistertitchener

Ding dong the witch is dead.

Despite the best efforts of the woke left, overtly biased media, and Democratic party at large, Sleepy Joe got it done. Trump will be out of the office in just a few short months. What. A. Relief.

Up until the pandemic outbreak, I think we'd gotten lucky with basically three years of uneventfulness in America. Many may disagree with this assessment, but we almost got by a full-term with Trump without any major crises that will be remembered decades from now.

But once COVID began racking up bodies, I think we got a clear taste of the scale of impact our president can have. Especially when that president is unabashedly free of any virtue or competence.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd prefer if we didn't YOLO it like this again. With existential threats like nuclear war, biological terrorism, climate change, and runaway artificial intelligence increasing in their likelihood and danger, I'm not sure how long we'll make it if we keep electing Trump-types.

I love the dude's music, but I don't want Kanye West running shit in 2024. So while we should celebrate this victory for America and the world, let's take a few steps to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

Abandon Identity Politics

Our skin color, gender identity, and sexual preferences are the least interesting thing about us and should be treated as such. It seems that we've forgotten that Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting for a world where we are judged for our character and not some imagined and trivial identity. Let's remind ourselves of the goal here, because these games are not only counterproductive, they offer easy ammunition to Trump-types who can point to the obvious loss of sense-making in this domain along the left.

Double Down on Conversation

There are two ways of changing someone's mind: conversation or violence. I suggest we aim for the former, and political correctness, cancel-culture, and limitations on free speech curb conversation in a way that historically has lead to either authoritarianism or civil war. So if we're going to ban any words from our dictionary, let's ban safe-space. The real world isn't safe, and progress only comes with pushing boundaries and getting some things wrong along the way.

Bring the Temperature Down

Biden's victory speech was incredibly reassuring given the divisiveness and anger we've seen over the last four years.

Let's take it upon ourselves to embody his message. Drop the anger and forgive. Trump supporters aren't Nazis. Black Lives Matter supporters aren't communists. We're all just human beings doing our best to be happy. That's really all it comes down to. We may not agree with each other's means for finding happiness, but do we need to hate each other for simply trying our best to live well? We need to stop being assholes to each other.
